{"id":232,"date":"2022-02-10T08:10:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T08:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simplyhosting.com\/support\/?post_type=ht_kb&#038;p=232"},"modified":"2022-02-11T16:50:25","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T16:50:25","slug":"what-is-fail2ban","status":"publish","type":"ht_kb","link":"https:\/\/www.simplyhosting.com\/support\/articles\/what-is-fail2ban\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Fail2Ban?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"fail2ban-is-a-software-framework-that-protects-computer-servers-from-brute-force-attacks\">Fail2Ban is a software framework that protects computer servers from brute-force attacks. &nbsp;The security tool has been implemented by Plesk for many years, however it isn&#8217;t installed by default on older versions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fail2ban-is-a-software-framework-that-protects-computer-servers-from-brute-force-attacks\">With the introduction of Plesk Obsidian, Fail2Ban, has been installed by default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nco-info-block\"><p class=\"nco-info-block-content\"><strong>Info:<\/strong> <strong>OS supported:<\/strong> Linux<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fail2Ban works by monitoring log files (e.g. \/var\/log\/auth.log, \/var\/log\/apache\/access.log, etc.) for selected entries and running scripts based on them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most commons use for Fail2Ban is to block selected IP addresses that may be trying to breach the system&#8217;s security. It can ban any host IP address that makes too many login attempts or performs any other unwanted action within a time frame as defined by the administrator of the VPS or Server. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nco-advice-block\"><p class=\"nco-advice-block-content\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Try setting it up to unban a blocked host within a certain period, so you do not &#8220;lock out&#8221;  genuine connections that may have been temporarily misconfigured.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Optionally longer bans can be custom-configure for &#8220;recidivist&#8221; abusers that keep coming back. Fail2Ban is normally set up to unban a blocked host within a certain period, this helps prevent &#8220;lock out&#8221; of any genuine connections that may have been temporarily misconfigured.
